{"id":111,"date":"2016-12-16T11:25:48","date_gmt":"2016-12-16T11:25:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kilgarriff.co.uk\/prize\/?page_id=111"},"modified":"2023-01-16T16:35:10","modified_gmt":"2023-01-16T16:35:10","slug":"winners","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/kilgarriff.co.uk\/prize\/winners\/","title":{"rendered":"Winners"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<h2>2022 winner: Elena \u00c1lvarez Mellado<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-328\" src=\"https:\/\/kilgarriff.co.uk\/prize\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/elena.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"170\" height=\"204\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The fourth iteration of the Adam Kilgarriff Prize has been awarded to Elena \u00c1lvarez Mellado for her leading role in the creation and development of an NLP-based system for the automatic retrieval of English loanwords in the Spanish press; for monitoring and analysing their use; for the associated website <a href=\"https:\/\/observatoriolazaro.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/observatoriolazaro.es\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1673514688548000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3VTAsBzQ8lALj2PYF6qFpU\">Observatorio L\u00e1zaro<\/a>; and for a\u00a0number of related assets, including a\u00a0Twitter bot (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lazarobot\">@lazarobot<\/a>), which gives the project a social dimension.<\/p>\n<p>This year we received 10 impressive applications. The constant and consistent high quality of all applications has been maintained.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Rundell, on behalf of the Trustees<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><b>2020: Pilar Leo\u0301n Arau\u0301z<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-248 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/kilgarriff.co.uk\/prize\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/pilar_leon_450x463-min.png\" alt=\"Pilar Leon\" width=\"400\" height=\"411\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kilgarriff.co.uk\/prize\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/pilar_leon_450x463-min.png 400w, https:\/\/kilgarriff.co.uk\/prize\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/pilar_leon_450x463-min-292x300.png 292w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>The third iteration of the Adam Kilgarriff Prize has been awarded to Pilar Leo\u0301n Arau\u0301z for her lead role in developing the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ecolexicon.ugr.es\/en\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/ecolexicon.ugr.es\/en\/index.htm&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1611294199670000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHHd6n-C-4WLh1TDWHV3aI0rM-DnA\">EcoLexicon<\/a>\u00a0and associated data and software.<\/div>\n<p>EcoLexicon is a sophisticated, multilingual terminological resource in the domain of environmental science. In addition to the front end, the suite of materials includes a specialized corpus and a set of semantic Sketch Grammars specially developed to extract semantically-related pairs of terms.<\/p>\n<div>The high quality of applications for the Prize has been maintained once again, and this year we received a record number of 16 applications. Matt gave a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/a02c19YLB3M?t=1805\">presentation<\/a> on his dictionary\u00a0at <a href=\"https:\/\/elex.link\/elex2019\/\">the eLex 2019 conference<\/a> in Sintra where the prize was officially awarded to him.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The Right Rhymes is an interactive, evidence-based dictionary, incorporating many features (such as data visualization and links to\u00a0external data) which are frequently talked about in the lexicographic literature, but not so often implemented. We were all impressed by\u00a0the way Matt employed current technologies and strong design skills to create such an appealing and innovative product.\u00a0His dictionary &#8211;\u00a0a solo project &#8211; is a model of corpus-driven lexicography.<\/p>\n<div>Matt\u2019s application stood out in a field of nine high-quality submissions for this year\u2019s Prize. Dr. Rutkowski is\u00a0head of the Section for Sign Linguistics at the University of Warsaw, and leads the team\u00a0developing the corpus of Polish Sign Language and the corpus-based Dictionary of Polish Sign Language.<\/p>\n<p>The Prize was awarded to Pawe\u0142 for his outstanding work on this project, and it was officially presented at the <a href=\"http:\/\/elex.link\/elex2017\">eLex 2017 conference in Leiden<\/a>. We were delighted to\u00a0welcome Gill Lamden, Adam\u2019s wife, to say a few words and present the winner\u2019s\u00a0cheque. Pawe\u0142 then went on to give one of the keynote talks of the conference &#8211; a fascinating and entertaining introduction to the work of the Section for Sign Linguistics, from\u00a0which we all learned a great deal. His talk was simultaneously interpreted by Lissa Zeviar, in International Sign Language, and it was also live-streamed. During the conference, Pawe\u0142 was interviewed by Victoria Nyst, on behalf of the language-research journal <a href=\"http:\/\/slovenscina2.0.trojina.si\/en\">Sloven\u0161\u010dina 2.0<\/a>.
